All of our designs at OldandFashion are painted in black and red only. Calligraphy has been around in China for over 4000 years. The oldest calligraphy is Jia Gu Wen, which is around 3600 years old. Jia Gu Wen was written on turtle shells in black ink. During the Han Dynasty, calligraphy gained in popularity and the use of color became more common. Although there are more and more colors used in Chinese painting and calligraphy today, we prefer to retain the more traditional style and limit the use of colors, using black and red only. Black was the original color and red in Chinese culture represents good luck. In each custom calligraphy, artists write their names in red which represents good luck and also shows who made the work. Paper carvings are very finely detailed designs that make a beautiful addition to calligraphy designs. Each paper carving design comes with a short description describing how the artist made the work and the meaning of the figures represented in the carving.
